Reading Response 2: After Boushie

Talking about racism is a hard thing for people to do because nobody wants to admit that they are racist. Racism is seen as intentionally horrible acts towards minorities, while it might not be. Every white person is considered racist because they reap the benefits of having the minorities as the lesser group. This article compares the shooting of Colton Boushie to the deadly events in other places such as Baltimore, New York, and Chicago. In both cases, “The comparison to be made isn’t about the deaths, but rather the narrative of white victimhood”. This means that the deaths were not necessarily similar, but the reactions of white people were. Their reactions towards these situations made it seem like the white people were the victims, not the people that were killed. It is weird to think that some people actually believe that the white people are the only victims in these situations. Through the reactions, I learned that racism is very present in Saskatchewan in not so obvious ways. Basically, white peoples traditional power and privilege is gradually disappearing which makes them upset and feeling victimized. This makes equality seem like the only way we can achieve it is by tearing the majority group down, instead of bringing the minority groups up. When issues like racism upset people, often times they resort to sharing their hateful comments online. This makes it easier for the person to hide because the comments might not be able to be traced back to them. When looking through comments online, the racism is more noticeable than the subtle bits not online. It is interesting to read the comments people make when they have a computer screen to hide themselves. It is a way people express their views on racism and racist acts in the most honest, but worst way possible. Some people see racism easier than others do. For example, while someone may view a poster with only white people on it as racist, I do not necessarily see it like that. Depending on what the poster is advertising, I just view it as a poster, I do not take the photo or background into consideration.

It is pointed out that white people are angry over the Boushie case. This anger brings forth the racist comments that are being made. I did not immediately notice all the racist discussions that took place until I learned more about the Boushie case and started paying attention to it. It is interesting to see the different viewpoints of everyone, whether they are involved or just people who follow the case. I wonder what this case would be like if it were reversed, would the outcome have been the same? Would all the racist discussions be taking place? After reading this article, I would like to know more about what caused the white people to feel victimized and why they feel this way. The explanation given in the article was not enough evidence in my eyes.
